Russia Is Now Recruiting Prisoners From Jail For Its Army In Ukraine

Prison recruits are being told they will be given money and freedom - if they survive - but they will be assigned high risk tasks like mine-clearing. They will not be given any identification and their families will not be informed if they are killed.

This is reminiscent of WWII penal battalions who were often used for suicidal attacks that opened the way for others. Other than that, sounds like a lot of fun...JL

Igor Sushko reports in Twitter:

FSB and Wagner are recruiting prisoners in Russian jails. The Federal Security Service is currently recruiting volunteers for Donbas among the prisoners. They are being pressured through promises of freedom and money for participation in military operations (in Ukraine), mine clearing, and restoration of buildings. They are openly told that they will not have any documents or badges, and that their bodies will not be given to their relatives. It sounds like they are bringing back the penal battalion concept from World War II. These guys are going to be sent on the most suicidal missions of the war, ideally not returning. If they survive, there will be more war crimes against Ukrainians.FSB & Wagner are recruiting prisoners in Russia. Conditions: 1) Promise of freedom & money after participation in military operations and mine-clearing in Donbas. 2) No documents, badges, or IDs will be issued. 3) Their bodies will not be returned to their families.

Osechkin received the following information: "I bring to your attention that in the colony IK-7 Yablonivka of the Federal Penitentiary Service in St. Petersburg and Leningrad region, the Federal Security Service is currently recruiting volunteers for Donbass among the prisoners. They are being pressured through promises of freedom for participation in military operations (in #Ukraine), mine clearing, and restoration of buildings on the territory of Donbas.

It sounds like they are bringing back the old штрафбат (penal battalion) concept from World War II. These guys are almost certainly going to be sent on the most suicidal missions of the war, ideally not returning. If they survive and take over a territory there will be more war crimes against Ukrainians.

At the same time, they are openly told that they will not have any documents or badges, and that their bodies will not be given to their relatives. They promise money to those who survive. They were practically given no time to think and consult with their families. "Families are terrified of what is happening. Many have wives and children. Convicts who agreed to leave are talking like zombies to their families.""Furthermore, yesterday, a general from FSIN & 2 FSB officers came to prison-6 (Obukhovo) to recruit: release on the condition of signing a bondage contract in the "Wagner" PMC for 1/2 year. However, not all of them will come back for sure."
hey are being pressured through promises of freedom for participation in military operations (in #Ukraine), mine clearing, and restoration of buildings on the territory of Donbas.
