Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi has deployed additional forces and resources to locate and eliminate Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups in the Pokrovsk sector. Russian forces are using their numerical advantage to try to infiltrate past the first line of defense, but are taking heavy losses. “The infiltration of such groups, although it requires deploying reserves to destroy them, is not ‘taking control of territory.’ Misunderstanding this has repeatedly led to errors in analyzing the situation in the Pokrovsk area,”Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi has deployed additional forces and resources to locate and eliminate Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups breaking through defensive lines in the Pokrovsk sector, General Staff spokesperson Andrii Kovalov told Ukrinform on Aug. 12.
According to Kovalov, Russian forces are using their numerical advantage to try to infiltrate past the first line of defense, but they are taking heavy losses.
“In the Pokrovsk sector, the enemy made 35 attempts to push back our units,” he said.

Situation in the Pokrovsk sector
On Aug. 11, former chief of staff of the named after Hero of Ukraine 12th Azov Special Purpose Brigade Bohdan Krotevych, known by the call sign Tavr, appealed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with a warning about an extremely difficult combat situation along the Pokrovsk-Kostiantynivka line.
“There is no fixed line of contact as such. (…) Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad are almost encircled. Kostiantynivka is in a semi-encirclement. The enemy is moving toward Kramatorsk and Druzhkivka,” he wrote on his X account.
Analysts from DeepState had earlier reported that Russian occupation forces were actively advancing in the Dobropillia area of Donetsk Oblast. They suggested that if Russian troops complete their force build-up and entrench themselves there, they will prepare for a deeper push into Ukrainian territory. The occupiers would also bring in drone crews, complicating efforts to reconfigure logistics and hold surrounding positions.
“With such a development, if it doesn’t change, we may reach a point where Dobropillia falls faster than Pokrovsk,” DeepState concluded.
Against this backdrop, representatives of Ukraine’s Tavria Operational-Strategic Group said Russian forces, while suffering heavy personnel losses, are trying to slip small groups past the first line of Ukrainian positions.
“The infiltration of such groups, although it requires deploying reserves to destroy them, is not ‘taking control of territory.’ Misunderstanding this has repeatedly led to errors in analyzing the situation and in public discussions in the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad urban area,” Ukrainian officers said.
They noted that fighting in this sector is the most intense compared to other parts of the front.
“Undoubtedly, the situation is and remains difficult. (…) However, Ukrainian forces are making maximum efforts to ensure that even those Russian groups that manage to penetrate the first line are destroyed as quickly as possible. And that is what is happening. We strongly urge taking this into account and not spreading information from unverified and poorly informed sources,” the officers said.
On Aug. 12, the 1st Azov Corps of Ukraine’s National Guard announced it had taken up a designated defensive line in the Pokrovsk sector.
