The Reason Alphabet Is Launching a Cybersecurity Business Now

As the market for computer services evolves, cybersecurity offers Google a means of providing value-added service to large institutions - both corporations and governments - that play to its competitive strengths: innovative technology, and massive computing power at scale.

Chronicle, as Alphabet's new venture is known, will reduce the time required to identify a threat with the ultimate goal being the ability to predict attacks before they happen.

Alphabet will combine machine learning with computing power. The largest standalone security companies such as Symantec have been challenged by start-ups promising more than anti-virus software. (And) despite the myriad of new solutions, cyber attacks continue to increase and companies struggle to protect themselves. Chronicle aims to help companies adapt to the hackers while they are still active. "Shrinking the time between when an attack starts and when it’s discovered could reduce a lot of damage,”
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is launching a cyber security company using technology created in its research and development arm called X. Chronicle will try to give organisations a much clearer view of their security situation by combining Google’s strengths in machine learning with large amounts of computing power and storage. The new company will be one of the subsidiaries called “Other Bets” alongside businesses including its self-driving cars unit Waymo and life sciences division Verily. Alphabet is entering a fragmented cyber security industry. The largest standalone security companies such as Symantec and McAfee have been challenged by a new generation of start-ups promising more sophisticated technologies than anti-virus software, and larger technology companies such as Cisco investing in the area. Despite the myriad of new solutions, cyber attacks continue to increase and companies struggle to protect themselves from hackers. Hackers aren’t invisible; they leave tiny clues like a virus or bacteria in the bloodstream while they quietly harm the hostAstro Teller, ‘captain of moonshots’ at Alphabet’s XAlphabet styles Google X as its “moonshot factory”. Astro Teller, its ‘captain of moonshots’, said people must look at cyber security challenges from new angles. Writing in a blog post, he said the digital world needs an “immune system”. “Most organisations currently have to work like doctors treating a disease after the symptoms have shown up and the damage has been done,” he wrote. “But hackers aren’t invisible; they leave tiny clues like a virus or bacteria in the bloodstream while they quietly harm the host.”Chronicle aims to help companies adapt to the hackers while they are still active, just as bodies build antibodies to identify and reject harmful things. It will be led by Stephen Gillett, who joined X from Google Ventures, the company’s venture capital arm, and was previously chief operating officer of Symantec, one of the world’s largest cyber security companies.X is focused on exploratory and groundbreaking projects that the company likens to moonshots. It aims to “graduate” the teams working on the technologies once they are ready to create businesses, either becoming ‘Other Bets’, units of Alphabet, or sometimes setting up outside the company. The lab started working on the cyber security project in 2016, led by Mr Gillett and two long-time engineers on Google’s security team Mike Wiacek and Shapor Naghibzadeh. They also worked with Bernardo Quintero from VirusTotal, a malware intelligence service bought by Google in 2012. “Providing better capabilities for finding the patterns in that data might not sound like much, but shrinking the time between when an attack starts and when it’s discovered (from a few months to a few hours or days) could reduce a lot of damage,” Mr Teller wrote.
