FedEx, UPS, US Postal Service Release Holiday Ship-By Dates

For the US Postal Service, the last date you can ship a package for delivery in the US and expect it to arrive in time for Christmas is December 15th.

For FedEx it is also December 21st. For UPS, it is between December 21st. This does not take into account the supply chain hold-ups in China, other parts of Asia and in US ports. Good luck. JL

Allison Prang reports in the Wall Street Journal:

The 2021 dates largely fall in line with last year’s shipping recommendations. UPS kept its ship-by dates the same as 2020. FedEx also kept its ground dates the same, while the Postal Service moved up its ship-by dates for first-class mail and priority mail by one day. Even with increased capacity, holiday plans for retailers and others this year are being further complicated by logjams at seaports, supply-chain disruptions and higher prices for materials and labor. Shipping rates, meanwhile, are going up faster than they have in nearly a decade.

U.S. mail carriers have released their recommended dates for customers to ship mail by in order for packages, letters and other shipments to arrive before the Christmas holidays.

The U.S. Postal Service is recommending domestic mail for destinations in the contiguous U.S. be sent by Dec. 15 for those using its ground service. The recommended date is Dec. 17 for first-class mail, Dec. 18 for priority mail, and Dec. 23 for priority mail express.

FedEx Corp. FDX 0.73% said the last day to ship most ground packages is Dec. 15. For ground economy packages, that day is Dec. 9. The last shipment day for customers using FedEx Express ranges from Dec. 21 until Christmas Eve, depending on what type of express option is chosen. Customers using FedEx freight priority or direct must ship those packages by Dec. 15. FedEx freight economy packages need to be sent by Dec. 9.

United Parcel Service UPS 1.22% is recommending customers who want their domestic packages to arrive by Dec. 24 to ship them no later than between Dec. 21 and Dec. 23 if they are using UPS 3-day select or UPS second-day or next-day air services. Customers can calculate the time and cost for domestic UPS ground shipping at the company’s website.

The 2021 dates largely fall in line with last year’s shipping recommendations. UPS kept its ship-by dates the same as 2020. FedEx also kept its ground dates the same, while the Postal Service moved up its ship-by dates for first-class mail and priority mail by one day.

Mail carriers in 2020 struggled with the volume of shipments sent ahead of the first holiday season during the pandemic, when more people did their shopping online. Both FedEx and USPS informed some of their biggest customers that any extra holiday-order trailers were going to have to wait to be picked up as the bulk of their capacity was accounted for. Smaller carriers also booked capacity for holiday months earlier than normal.

FedEx expects to have substantially more ground capacity for the peak 2021 season because of its infrastructure investments, Chief Operating Officer and President Rajesh Subramaniam told analysts on the company’s first-quarter earnings call last month.

About 300 customers comprise UPS’s peak-volume surge, Chief Executive Carol Tomé said on the company’s earnings call in late July.

“We’re sitting down with each of them, understanding what their projections are, what their promotions are, how are they thinking about the holiday season,” she said.

The Postal Service said earlier this year that it plans to add 138 new package-sorting machines before the holiday season and open 45 annex facilities to help with any overflow of packages.

But even with increased capacity, holiday plans for retailers and others this year are being further complicated by logjams at seaports, supply-chain disruptions and higher prices for materials and labor. Shipping rates, meanwhile, are going up faster than they have in nearly a decade.
