Russian Who Ordered Attack Killing 59 Ukrainian Civilians, Suffers Retaliation

Captain Nagayko's battery fired on a funeral being held in a Ukrainian village in Kharkiv oblast in which 59 civilians died. 

It appears that Ukrainian intelligence has retaliated. JL

Russian Captain Konstantin Nagayko, a battery commander in the 112th Missile Brigade of the 1st Tank Army, was seriously injured in an explosion in Russia's Ivanovo Oblast, on 3 January. On October 5, 2023, Nagayko was involved in a 2023 attack on a café in the village of Hroza, Kharkiv Oblast, which resulted in the deaths of 59 Ukrainian civilians. Nagayko has sustained multiple shrapnel injuries to nearly all of his organs, particularly the brain, and underwent a craniotomy. Nagayko is in a critical condition and reportedly has little chance of survival

Russian commander Konstantin Nagayko was seriously injured in an explosion in Shuya, in Russia's Ivanovo Oblast, on 3 January, Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) has reported. Nagayko was involved in a 2023 attack on a café in the village of Hroza, Kharkiv Oblast, which resulted in the deaths of 59 Ukrainian civilians.

Details: DIU said an explosion shook the town of Shuya on 3 January. At its epicentre was Captain Konstantin Nagayko, battery commander of the 112th Missile Brigade of the 1st Tank Army of the Western Military District of the Russian Armed Forces (military unit No. 03333). He was on duty in his military unit at the time.

Nagayko sustained multiple shrapnel injuries to nearly all of his organs, particularly the brain, and later underwent a craniotomy. DIU reported that "depressing rumours" are circulating within the Russian 112th Missile Brigade, suggesting Nagayko has little chance of survival and is in a critical condition.

DIU noted that Captain Nagayko, 29, was born in Svobodny, a town in Russia's Amur Oblast. He graduated from the St Petersburg University of Aerospace Instrumentation and the Mikhailovsky Military Artillery Academy.

He directly participated in the full-scale war against Ukraine, taking part in strikes with Iskander ballistic missiles on both civilian and military targets in Sumy and Kharkiv oblasts.

 

Background:

• On 5 October 2023, the Russians attacked a café in the village of Hroza, Kupiansk district, Kharkiv Oblast, while a wake for a fallen soldier was taking place there. Law enforcement officers identified all 59 people killed.
• The Security Service of Ukraine established the identities of two traitors who guided the Russian missile attack on the café.
• Russian forces may have struck the café thinking that Ukrainian soldiers were there, but those present were all civilians, the Kharkiv Oblast Prosecutor's Office noted.
• Vasily Nebenzya, the Russian Federation’s Permanent Representative to the UN, said at a meeting of the Security Council on Monday 9 October that the funeral of a "high-ranking Ukrainian nationalist" had been underway in Hroza.
• The National Police of Ukraine refuted Nebenzya’s claim about "neo-Nazis" in Hroza.
