Dobropillia: Where Russia's Summer Offensive Died

Pictured is the literal 'carpet of corpses' the Russians created at Dobropillia and Pokrovsk over which their demoralized, surviving comrades are still being ordered to attack.

Being incapable of seizing unexpected opportunities as initially happened at Dobropillia, the Russians left themselves open to exploitation by more nimble, adaptive Ukrainian forces. The result not only stopped the Dobropillia incursion, but led to the wide scale decimation of Russian units on the Pokrovsk front, disrupting and then derailing the Kremlin's summer offensive plan. New Voice of Ukraine reports:

Ukraine’s counteroffensive near Dobropillia foiled Russia’s summer plan to seize much of Donbas by November and spoiled their summer offensive campaign. "Our operation ruined those plans that the Russians communicated to the U.S. that they would occupy a larger part of Donbas - they said by September, then moved the dates to precisely by November." They suffered heavy losses which on the Pokrovsk axis amount to 100–200 soldiers per day. in the Dobropillia operation Ukrainian Forces had liberated more than 174 sq. km with Russian losses exceeding 3,000 soldiers.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive near Dobropillia foiled Russia’s summer plan to seize much of Donbas by November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, Interfax-Ukraine reported on Oct. 8.

He made this statement at a meeting with journalists.

“The most important thing is that our operation ruined all those plans that the Russians communicated to the U.S. side — that they would supposedly occupy Donbas, a larger part of Donbas, precisely by November," he explained.

"They said by September, then moved the dates to November. This operation, certainly, has an impact on the defense of Pokrovsk. Understanding that they suffered heavy losses at Dobropillia, they have now been tasked to seize Pokrovsk urgently, at any cost.”

Therefore, the operation in the Dobropillia area “spoiled the Russians’ summer offensive campaign.” He added that since the start of the Dobropillia operation on Aug. 21, the Russians have lost more than 12,000 soldiers, of whom over 7,000 were killed.

Zelenskyy said the counteroffensive continues and, although it is very difficult, it is also “very timely.”

Commenting on the Kremlin’s aim to urgently capture Pokrovsk, the president said enemy losses on the Pokrovsk axis amount to 100–200 sodliers per day.

"Thus, the most intense directions on the front remain Pokrovsk and Dobropillia, with Novopavlivka ranked next by intensity," the president stressed.

“Situation is tense on the Novopavlivka direction. Probably, after Dobropillia and Pokrovsk, our next challenge today is the Novopavlivka axis. What do we have there? We have four Russian armies that had fire control or some presence of reconnaissance-sabotage groups — the eight villages we talked about. That’s what we saw. Four villages are completely cleared by our troops. We are still fighting for another four.”

He reported that on the Kupyansk direction, Special Operations Forces, SBU A unit, and assault units continue counter-sabotage measures.

On the Lyman direction, recovery of lost positions is ongoing, the president added.

Ukrainian counteroffensive on the Dobropillia axis

On Sept. 18, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian forces were conducting a counteroffensive operation in Donetsk Oblast, including in the Pokrovsk and Dobropillia areas.

On Sept. 20, the Ukrainian president said that in the Dobropillia and Pokrovsk areas roughly 330 square kilometers were under Ukrainian control, 160 sq. km liberated and over 170 sq. km cleared of occupiers.

On Sept. 23, Zelenskyy announced at a press conference with U.S. President Donald Trump that in September the Armed Forces of Ukraine had de-occupied 360 square kilometers and encircled 1,000 Russian soldiers.

On Sept. 24, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said that fighters of the 1st Azov Corps of the National Guard, together with other Defense Forces units, had since Aug. 4 liberated and cleared eight settlements in Donetsk Oblast.

On Sept. 26, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported that in the Dobropillia direction the Defense Forces had liberated 168 sq. km and cleared about 182 sq. km of sabotage groups.

On Sept. 29, Zelenskyy said that in the Dobropillia operation the Armed Forces had liberated more than 174 sq. km with Russian losses exceeding 3,000 soldiers.

On Oct. 1, Syrskyi said the Defense Forces cut through the so-called Dobropillia salient and were doing everything possible to inflict maximum losses on the Russian occupiers.

It’s incredible to see how Russia’s summer offensive hit a wall despite all their resources. The combination of strategy, resilience, and unexpected challenges clearly shaped the outcome. It really shows that even in high-stakes situations, smart planning is everything—almost like a well-timed move on tiger bet, where one wrong step can change the whole game!
